MyGiftedLife.org was created when the Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted site's forums closed. As one of the many gifted people who had benefited from the fellowship of that community, I realized that a need existed. I decided that it was my turn to offer support to others, so I organized a place for our community.

Re:About Us

This is a draft "About Us" page. I've gotten across a couple of important points, I think. We're not a corporate entity, we aren't paid to do this; we are a real community. I think I was also successful in making it clear that I'm part of the community, hosting a meeting place, not the "owner".
I thought it might be nice for a few of us to say something about our group that might encourage new members. Would anyone like to add a brief testimonial to the masses? Just a couple of lines.

I like it - I can't think of anything to add. It's perfect as it is.
The only thing I can think is sort of like an ad blurb - like "Hey, all the inane shallow chatter about stupid stuff at other forums got you down? Come here for more in depth and intelligent discussion about things that actually matter."
But I think that sort of gives off the wrong vibe. It is what draws me to the site personally, but I don't think it's a good sentiment for an About Us thing.

Here's my testimonial: (your welcome to it, and feel free to edit... but please don't use it until you have a few more to add!! I don't want to be the only one posted, and I don't want to go first !!!)
Mygiftedlife is a safe haven. It's a place where anyone who experiences life from a gifted perspective can share their unique selves and weave a common thread going beyond the tapestry of any usual forum to one based upon expanding awareness of experiences, self, others and the world we live in. Mygiftedlife is a place for delving deeper. I've come here and been understood when that seemed impossible. Gifted people and those advocating for gifted children navigate societal structures that present a great challenge. Support can be hard to find, but here it is.

Aw, shucks, thanks! It was easy since I do love the new digs, and I really deeply value the discussions, even when I've just lurked!
Icon needs more! So just gush. That's all I did! (... and then obsessed way too much over some of the wording of course)

About Us

I have just this morning found this website thanks to a Google Alert. Thank you very much for doing this. It's a wonderful resource. Mind you, I think if I had found it earlier it might have deterred me from doing my own! www.thegiftedway.com.

Because many of our members are in vastly different timezones and are rarely online at the same time, our chatroom experiment was a bit of a failure. Instead, due to the combination of realtime and delayed messaging Twitter allows, I created a Twibe on Twibes.com called appropriately enough MyGiftedLife. There is a link in the top menu that goes straight to the MGL Twibe.

Writing an article for MyGiftedLife is meant to be an easy and enjoyable experience. There is no strict house style other than the normal posting policy. Please remember to be careful of what information about yourself or others you divulge for privacy protection, but other than that be enthusiastic and have fun. Know your audience and believe in yourself.
From a structural point of view, it might be best to avoid word processors like Microsoft Word which add a lot of hidden formatting incompatible with the entry window. It's much easier to paste from an editor like Notepad or Wordpad and then correct any formatting issues. I often write short articles directly from the entry window and longer ones in an HTML-compliant editor.

The first requirement to submit an article is that you have the proper permissions. The minimum user level to submit an article is "author". This is protected primarily to prevent spam from attacking the site. Just contact an administrator (e.g. iconoclast) to change your user level for you if you want to start submitting articles. Then you'll have a link in the main menu on the lefthand side of the site to submit articles.

In web 2.0, there is now a tendency to decentralize services and network in with other sites that offer those services. One service that I think can currently be done better outside MyGiftedLife.org is handling the bookmark (weblink) resources. I have set up an account on Del.icio.us to handle our bookmarks using their tag system to make resources easier for people to find.
There are two ways to access the MGL bookmarks. The first is through the link at the top of the page titled Delicious MGL. This link opens up a new tab or window with the MyGiftedLife Delicious account containing all the weblinks collected and volunteered by our members and friends.
The other method may be more useful to quickly find something under a particular tag. On the Home page and a few other pages, there is a tag cloud at the bottom of the page. The tag cloud shows the tags linked to the bookmarks. with the largest tags having the most bookmarks and the smallest having the fewest. In this way, you can immediately jump to the section you want to look at.
I hope everyone finds this useful, please contact the administrators if you have any problems or ideas. And if you belong to Del.icio.us yourself, why not add MyGiftedLife to your network and share some of your bookmarks with us?
